Understanding If Eyelid Surgery Is the Right Choice For You

Bright and alert eyes convey vibrancy and allow you to navigate the world with your eyes, quite, literally, wide open. But it doesn’t matter how bright your eyes are if they’re half hidden by drooping lids, which can not only impair your vision but make you look tired and older than you may be. This is why more than 150,000 people in the U.S. turned to eyelid surgery in 2017, making it number three on the list of the top five cosmetic surgical procedures in that same year.

If the thought of eyelid surgery gives you pause, it’s understandable but largely unfounded. Here at Blue Ash Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we’ve helped many of our patients in Cincinnati, Ohio, regain a more youthful appearance and, as important, clear up their vision, with a simple blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery.

Here’s a look at why you might be a candidate for eyelid surgery and what you need to know about the procedure itself.

Looking out

Let’s face it, first impressions are made in less than a second, and if you’re greeting the world with tired-looking eyes, no matter how well rested you may be, you’ll have to do a little extra work to prove otherwise. Upper eyelids at half mast and lower lids with bags underneath can rob your entire face of your vibrancy, making you appear fatigued and less alert.

And the problem only gets worse as you age because your skin begins to lose elastin and collagen and succumbs to gravity. The end result is eyelids that belie your youthful spirit and worse, interfere with your vision.

Although cosmetically, drooping eyelids may be undesirable, they can also impact your vision in significant ways as your skin begins to collapse over the top and sides of your lids. At first, the effect may be merely bothersome, but remember, the condition will only worsen with age, and the encroachment into your vision will continue.

Opening up

When you come in and sit down with Dr. Russell Stastny, he reviews your problem and your goals and comes up with the best solution. If the problem is only in your upper eyelids, that’s where he’ll concentrate his efforts. If, however, you have bags under your lower lids or those lids are beginning to sag and pull away from your eye, he can also help with these issues.

In both cases, we typically perform the surgery on an outpatient basis. When it comes to making you comfortable, you can discuss whether local or general anesthesia would be better. During the surgery itself, Dr. Stastny makes a fine incision in your upper lid along the crease and repositions fat deposits, tighten your muscles, and removes the excess tissue. Afterward, he sutures up the area.

For your lower lid, the doctor makes the incision along your lower lash line and performs much the same procedure as above, in most cases.

The time this takes depends upon whether you’re having just your upper lids done or you lower lids as well. In either case, the entire procedure doesn’t take more than a few hours and, often, much less.

The road to brighter eyes

After your surgery, you’re free to go home, but you should arrange for someone to drive you. We give you full instructions for at-home care of your surgical site and supply you with the necessary medications. You’ll likely experience some bruising and swelling, which are perfectly natural, but most patients report little pain afterward.

During the week or two after your surgery, you may want to limit your social engagements as your eyes heal and the bruising dissipates. The skin around your eyes is quite sensitive, so it takes a little time for eyelids to heal properly.

But when they do, you’ll be rewarded with a clear view of the world, and the world can get a clear view back at you.
